HVAC TIPS

While it can feel inconvenient to schedule
maintenance on an HVAC system that seems to be working just fine, nothing is worse than being
without heat or A/C when you need it.
 

1. Schedule an annual maintenance tune-up to keep your heating and cooling systems running safely and efficiently year round. Early fall is a great time for this as your HVAC professional is likely less busy then.
2. Insulate your attic, windows and doors. An improperly insulated attic can cost you a lot of money.  COS Utilities recommends an attic insulation level of  R-38 (about 12-15 inches) for our area.  Your HVAC company can install it for you and add weather stripping or caulking to plug air leaks around windows and doors.
3. Clean your duct system every 3-5 years. Clogged air ducts hamper your system’s ability to move clean air through your home. If you are suffering from allergies or unexplained illnesses AND you see large deposits of dust in the ducts, don’t delay cleaning.
4. Upgrade to a smart thermostat!  Program it with a daily schedule to save energy when you are away from home.
5. Change your air filters quarterly. The filters keep pollution out of your system and greatly effect the efficiency and lifespan of your furnace or air conditioning units.
6. Upgrade to high-efficiency HVAC units when it’s time to replace your old ones and take advantage of energy rebates.
